Harvey Heritage Graveyard Tour
Saturday October 18 @ 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Join us for an afternoon of touring some cemeteries of Harvey Rural Community. We’ll be visiting several graveyards throughout the area and learning about some of the notable people buried there.
Participants will first meet at the Harvey Heritage Office at the Upper Village Mall, Unit 7, 2306 Route 3, Harvey. The tour will then proceed along Route 3 towards York Mills, turning right along Route 635, driving to Route 636, turning right towards the Village, then ending up back at the Harvey Heritage Office.
Cemeteries will include, but are not limited to, the Harvey Settlement Cemetery and the Old Magundy Church Yard. Due to the lengthy distances, we couldn’t include all the cemeteries in Harvey and hope to offer tours of some of them sometime in the future.
The cost of the tour is $10 for members in good standing and $15 for others. To register, email harveyhistoricalassociation@gmail.com or leave a message for Sheryl Bartlett at 506 366 3920 and she will return your call.
Payment can be made by cheque, cash, or e-transfer to harveyhistoricalassociation@gmail.com.
A maximum of 20 people will be signed up on a first-come, first-served basis. Please consider carpooling if possible. Please let us know if you need a ride. We can pick you up!
The tour could take up to 3 hours with lots of driving and walking. There is no access to restrooms along the way, and participants may want to bring drinks and snacks with them.
We are looking forward to an engaging time on a beautiful autumn day!
Update: On a beautiful day, nine participants did a tour of some of the cemeteries in Harvey. We drove the loop from the Harvey Heritage Office at the Upper Village Mall on Route 3 to York Mills, then along 635 to 636 then to the Village ending up at the Cherry Mountain Cemetery. A map of the route is attached. Most of the cemeteries were open to the public and we obtained permission to visit the Hood family plot which is on private property. It was estimated that the tour would take 3 hours but it took an additional hour! Yet, everyone seemed to enjoy the afternoon on what turned out to be a beautiful Autumn day. We shared information about how the cemeteries were established and any churches they were affiliated with. We talked about some of the monuments to people who lived long ago and their stories. They helped build our communities and it is good to remember them. There are many more cemeteries in Harvey to explore sometime in the future.
