HARVEY SETTLERS

The first settlers of Harvey Settlement sailed from Berwick-upon-Tweed on 28 May 1837 on board the brig. “Cornelius of Sunderland”, landing in Saint John on 12 July 1837, and travelled up the St. John River to Fredericton on the steamer “Waterwitch”. A complete passenger list of those on board ship did not survive the passage of time, and most lists of the first settlers just included the names of the men, as heads of the families, or single men. In January, Helen Craig located at the Provincial Archives a list of the emigrants who applied for land on the “New St. Andrews Road” in August 1837, and this list included the names and ages of the family members. (PANB RS 637/26d Emigrant List for Harvey Settlement 1837).

In the same file was a list of persons who drew ballots for land, and a list of names of “English Emigrants” who had settled on the land. (The lists were transcribed by Jocelean Hall from photocopy of handwritten originals.)
