Grist Mill

Undated photo of the Grist Mill in York Mills built by George Lister.

From The Daily Gleaner, 14 July 1937: “About the year 1857, George Lister (1823-1891) built the first woollen mill in York Mills. He also built a sawmill and a grist mill. Sometime after the 1861 Census he moved from the Harvey area to Minnesota.

It would appear that his brother, James Moneylaws Lister (1832-1912) took over as proprietor of the grist mill. Listed in the Manners Sutton Subscribers Directory in the Atlas of York County, New Brunswick, published by Halfpenny & Co., Fredericton, N.B. in 1878 – “James Lister, Proprietor of Grist Mill, Harvey Mills.” (Harvey Mills later became York Mills.)
