Scientist specializing in telecommunication technologies, Beaverbrook Scholar, awarded multiple patents
Clarence Burke Swan, known as Burke, was born on a farm on the Tweedside Road, Harvey, New Brunswick, on November 9, 1931. He earned full scholarships to attend the University of New Brunswick for electrical engineering then earning a PhD at the University of Toronto specializing in microwave communication technology.
Throughout Dr. Swan’s career at Bell Labs, he made numerous contributions to microwave and fiber optic communication systems, important to telephone and internet networks across the globe. In 1986, he received the Microwave Applications Award from the IEEE Microwave Theory & Techniques Society for outstanding application of microwave theory and techniques. He is a Life fellow of IEEE and has twelve patents for technologies he developed.
Dr. Swan presently lives in Allentown, Pennsylvania with his wife, Patricia (Herschel) Swan. He spends a number of weeks at their cottage on Harvey Lake.
