The Pass Family

One of the benefits of writing for the Lionews is that it directs people to me in their search for family history, and we sit down and share our findings. A good example of this is the communication I have had with Roger McCully by visits and letters. Roger lives in the United States, comes to a summer cottage at Oromocto Lake and visits with family in McAdam. Roger is a descendent of the Pass family, and though the Pass name is no longer in our Harvey phone book the bloodlines descend into many families here in Harvey. I thought it might be interesting to some of you, so sharing the research of Roger McCully, the organization of Jocelean Swan Hall and some of my own research, 1 can present a bit of the history of the Pass family.

From “Notes on North America” by Professor Johnstone written after he visited Harvey on Nov 12, 1849:

“Mr. Pass — He was an Englishman from a more southern district, and had been the manager of a chemical work in some of the midland counties. He had saved 150 pounds, brought up his only son as a carpenter, and then came out six years ago, and settled at the northern end of Harvey. He had done well, he said, but through hard work; and all who have done well say the same. He considered himself better than at home, and that no climate could exceed that of his new country. It is especially the place for the laboring man, for he cannot worsen himself; and, if he is industrious, is always getting better.”
